APPLICATION : INDUS MAKE U TUBE LIQUID COLUMN MANOMETER IS USE TO DETERMINE VELOCITY AND STATIC PRESSURE, LEAKAGE, FAN EFFICIENCY AND GAS PRESSURE. Manometer have ‘U’ shaped tube, half filled with Liquid (Water / Mercury / SP Gr 0.81 ). When both the tubes are open, the liquid is at the same height in each leg (Tube/Limbs). When positive pressure is applied to one leg the liquid is forced down in that leg and up in the other. The difference in the height, which is the sum of the reading above and below zero, tells you the pressure. When Vacuum is applied to one Leg, the liquid rises in that leg and falls in the other. The difference in the height indicates the amount of Vacuum.

This is a very useful gauge to measure reduced pressure. It covers the range 0.01 to 0.001 mm of Mercury. It is usually employed in conjunction with vacuum pump. It has direct reading, compact and is charged with only 11 to 12 ml of mercury. To know the vacuum in the system the gauge must be tilted to vertical position. After knowing the pressure tilt the gauge to horizontal position (Rest Position).

Glass U Tube with stopcock mounted on hard wooden stand. One arm of the tube is closed and completely filled with Mercury. Vacuum connection is made to the other arm. When Pressure is too low to support column of mercury, it beings to tail in the tube. The movable scale is used to measure height of column.
Unit has scale graduated from 0 to 100 mm on both sides of the central zero. Difference between levels of two mercury columns measure vacuum applied to gauges.
Heavy wall glass Manometer tubes has constrictions to prevent mercury surge from breaking glass if vacuum is unexpectedly high.
